What is Learn Green NYC?
Learn Green NYC is a coalition of sustainability professionals in education, design and enterprise in support of youth engagement, healthy learning environments and community-based approaches to low impact, high quality living.

Learn Green NYC is hosting an invitational event for NYC youth and concerned adults on Friday, April 11, 2008 at Teacher's College Columbia University, as part of the "Schools, Food and Community" conference sponsored by the Baum Forum, a non-profit organization that fosters ongoing dialogue about schools, food and farming issues, focusing on the preservation of a healthy, diversified food system.

This "Learn Green NYC Youth Forum" is the first of a series of Learn Green NYC programs to engage youth throughout the city. View the program.

Goals
To transform NYC into a more sustainable city through inclusive participation in greening efforts, with a particular focus on empowering youth, whose voices are critical to today and the future.

Why?

  • 24% of NYC’s 8.1 million people are under 18, yet currently their voices are not included in meaningful ways in many of the greening efforts underway in the city.

  • Because we can all benefit from young people’s insights, creativity, perspective and energy.

Objectives

  1. Identify, connect and support opportunities for youth to lead and participate in sustainable NYC initiatives such as PlaNYC 2030, the Green Schools Green Map project, activities in their schools and local youth programs.

  2. Develop ongoing connections between the Learn Green NYC event and the Baum Forum events focusing on sustainability, food and schools.

  3. Enjoy learning together: kids & adults meet each other, work together and share youth-centric ideas that will enhance our common future.
